Is it as fast as my current tape drive?

Some users report significant decreases in backup time with LaserVault Backup, compared to their tape backups. This will depend of course on your tape drive, the speed of your iSeries host, and what TCP/IP connection you use.

Try it yourself and see. The first user reported backing up in ¼ of the time compared to their tape drive on longer backups, and 1/10 the time on short libraries. And of course, there is no manual tape handling time at all.

Users with the newest LTO-3 tape drives report save times are about the same with LaserVault Backup, using 1 Gb ethernet. IBM offers suggestions on how to optimize tcp/ip transfers, and we are currently researching those to improve speed even more. We are also testing low-cost tcp/ip offload engine (TOE) boards for another method to speed up transfer.

Newer iSeries users can install 10Gbit ethernet cards for the fastest possible transfer speeds. Most users will not need this capability.

Most users will get better download speed with Laservault Backup, and when you factor in the automated cataloguing and the convenience of not loading, labelling, finding, losing, or misusing tapes, the advanatages are clear.
