Here's a timing comparison a user sent us, comparing the time to save a library on tape to the time to save the same library with LaserVault Backup. The general results were about 4 to 1 or better.

The time savings you get will depend on your tape drive speed, and your tcp/ip connection speed. For best results use 100 megabit or gigabit ethernet. This comparison was of 10 megabit ethernet versus a QIC cartridge drive, both of these are sort of 'worst-case' on speed.

You can buy faster tape drives, but the problem is that the mechanical positioning on the faster drives is still about the same as the slower drives, and you lose a lot of the speed advantage of a higher transfer rate. Meanwhile the newer iSeries machines support gigabit ethernet, and even the older machines support 100 megabit ethernet.

Users with 1 gigabit ethernet report savliblv speed of about 2.4 gigabytes per minute, or about 150 gigabytes per hour.

Lower cost per save file byte

Besides reliability and manual handling costs, tape suffers from low compression, and the fact that if you need to store any data at all, you have to use a complete cartridge. Here is a sample of how costs work out when you take thos two factors into consideration.

Original save file size: 20 GB. Tape cartidge size: 20/40GB. Tape cartridge cost: $80

Cost to store library: on tape $80

Original save file size: 20 GB. Hard disk size: 500 GB. External hard drive cost: $125

Actual disk space used at 8x compression: 2.5 GB Percentage of disk used: 0.5%

Cost to store library on disk: $0.62 Savings using LaserVault Backup: $79.38 or 99%

LaserVault Backup helps you leverage the lower cost of PC hardware in your backup process.

Hard drive prices continue to fall month by month.
